Another week another win that wasn't pretty. This one is a little more concerning as it looks like Rice will be out the rest of the season with a torn ACL. MRI tomorrow. So the slow start cost us more than what was on the scoreboard this week.
Defense. Once again a slow start. Gave up another first drive td and then really nothing after that. The field goal was a result of a turnover that put the Chargers in field goal range. They did a pretty nice job getting to Herbert putting pressure on him. Jones had a really nice game. They pitched a shutout for 3 quarters of the game hard to complain about anything they did today. Spaggs has this unit playing outstanding. Right now they are carrying the team.
Mahomes. This was a solid game from Mahomes. Outside of the Int. The INT was yet another example of throwing the ball deep just to throw the ball deep. He has been costly this season with INTs and was extra costly today as the pick was where Rice was hurt. But after that pick Mahomes really settled down. He started taking what the defense was giving him and really we started to get the run game going. Hopefully it's the start of what we will see more of the rest of the season. Teams are just not going to let us beat them with the deep shots very often we have to be willing to do what we did a year ago take the short chunks.
Kelce: I think it's pretty clear they were going to get him going. That was a major part of the game plan today. It was good to see Kelce looking like Kelce again. I never bought into the him being washed up talk. Though I do think age is just a tad of what is going on it's very overblown. He didn't just suddenly get old from Feb. With Rice going down he is going to be needed to step up more than they probably planned for him to this year. But the good news is we know that he can do it.
Worthy: Had a really nice TD today. That was a deep shot that did work. He also came up with what turned out to be the game clinching 1st down. Good to see the rookie step up in that moment. Now he is going to have to grow up faster than the Chiefs probably wanted him to at the start of the season. It's going to be kind of exciting to see what he can do with that speed. Hopefully he is able to do what Rice did a year ago and step up a little more each week.
Hunt: Good to see him back. He really showed that he still had it today. What's really exciting is to think what we will be able to do win Pacheco gets back. We also have CEH coming back. Steel is probably going to have his days numbered due to the depth we suddenly have at RB. Welcome back sir look forward to seeing more
WRs. We have some guys. JuJu and Hardman are going to have to get more involved in the offense. I would say Skyy as well but once again today he just showed that he is just not a NFL WR.
O line: I don't think they have been bad this year but they also are not playing good enough IMO. Way to much pressure on Mahomes. We have a couple of young tackles so you kind of have to think that is going to happen. And Taylor has to figure it out fast. Still getting way to many flags. They have been a part of why the offense has struggled. If it's not pressure on Mahomes it's a holding flag that brings back a big play or sets us back.
Overall it's really hard to be upset with a 4-0 start to any season. This team once again made it look harder than it had to be. Made a ton of mistakes early to dig an early hole. But once again they were able to figure out a way to win. One of these weeks they are going to pay the price for the slow starts and early mistakes. I said during the game that maybe this team needs a but kicking to wake them up. I go back to a couple of examples of that like last year the Raiders the last loss we had. Andy said after the Super Bowl that he texted the Raiders coach and thanked him for kicking our butts because it woke them up. I will never cheer for them to lose. But should such an event happen I think we might be better off because of it. This is a very good football them they have been good for a long time. Sometimes a team like that needs a wake up call. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
It's on to the Saints on Monday night football next week. They have looked better than expect to start the year. Going to have to expect another stress filled game because that's just what this team does. Lets just hope we keep the win streak going.
